A Liverpool shop for one ritual
We sell one thing: the ritual of the Moroccan hammam, the public steam bath that every Moroccan town keeps. The order never changes. Steam, then soap, then the glove, then oil. You do not need a steam room for it, only a bathroom with the door closed, an hour, and the right four or five things on the side of the bath.
The ritual, step by step
Start with about ten minutes of a hot shower, door closed, until the skin is warm and soft. Smooth a thin layer of black soap scrub over damp skin and leave it on for five to ten minutes. Rinse, then work the kessa glove over the body in firm sweeping strokes with light pressure, one area at a time; the glove does the work. Press rose hydrosol onto the clean skin, and finish with a few drops of argan oil while the skin is still slightly damp.

Nila, safely
Nila is the blue powder of the hammam, used once a week as a mask stirred into plain yoghurt. Patch test on the inner arm and wait 48 hours before the first use. Wear gloves to grind or mix it, cover the sink, and rinse the bowl and the basin straight away: it marks ceramic, enamel and cloth if it dries, and it can tint skin for a day or two if it is left on thick. Keep it away from the eyes and from broken, sunburnt or irritated skin.
